History/Info:
Point Loma Lighthouse was built in 1854, one of the first 8 lighthouses constructed on the West Coast by the U.S. government. It was built in the same style as those on the East Coast, and positioned as they were, high above sea level. The placement, however, didn't work well in California because the coastal weather is different. Common low clouds and fog that occur frequently here rendered the lighthouse ineffective. This lighthouse was only in service 36 years, then abandoned in 1891 when a new lighthouse was built on the point down near the water.

Open daily 9am - 5pm year round; 9-6 pm July 4 through Labor Day

Personal Note:
Old Point Loma Lighthouse is located at the Cabrillo National Monument site which looks over San Diego California. This is one of the few lighthouses that we've been able to go into. Although you can't get all the way up to the light itself, you can climb the stairs to a point just below the light which allows you to get a pretty close up view of the light itself.

• In San Diego take Route 5 exit 14B, Crosby.
• Take Crosby to Harbor. Take a right on Harbor.
• You'll follow Harbor (which becomes N. Harbor) all the way until you get to Route 209.
• At the intersection of Route 209 (it will cross N. Harbor) take a LEFT onto 209.
• Follow route 209 all the way to Cabrillo National Monument. There is plenty of parking.
