Alligator Reef
Lighthouse,
Near Islamorada, Florida
| Last Visited: January, 2001 History/Info:
Alligator Reef Lighthouse lies about 4 miles off the coast of Indian Key and
the town of Islamorada. The lighthouse was built in 1873 for a cost of $185,000.
Some of the most powerful tropical storms have passed over the lighthouse with
some winds hitting 200 mph. Even with all this fury the lighthouse has survivied
the storms. This is in most part because of its skeletal design. This allows the
winds and seas to pass through it. Where other lighthouses would be demolished,
Alligator Reef Lighthouse remains standing.
