History/Info:
On the southernmost tip of the island lies Bonifacio, the jewel of
Corsica. From her high, cliff-top perch Bonifacio has defied gravity
for a thousand years or more and is unique by virtue of both her
history and extraordinary geographical location.
The ancient citadel is built on a natural promontory of chalk,
overlooking nearby Sardinia and the Straits of Bonifacio that separate
the two islands.
Today Bonifacio is above all a tourist centre, but her exceptional
beauty remains untouched. Bonifacio is sometimes known as 'the City of
the Cliffs', and traces of the earliest buildings are to found within
the fortified walls of the citadel, the 'haute ville'.
On the tip of the promontory is the marine cemetery and windmills that
date from the XII century - but best of all is the view stretching
right across the straits to Sardinia.
The Madonetta lighthouse and Timon's Point mark the entry to the port
from the sea. Terrace bars and restaurants, ice-cream parlours and
boutiques welcome the yachtsman to this enchanting spot where the
waves gently lap against the quay.Source:
