History/Info:
Bear Island Light marks the entrance to Northeast Harbor on Mount Desert Island. The lighthouse became the property of Acadia National Park in 1987 and reestablished as an active navigational aid in 1989.

The lighthouse is leased to a private owner by the Park but it can be easily seen from the water via one of the many mail boats or ferries leaving Northeast Harbor and Southwest Harbor heading to the Cranberry Islands.

  • You'll need to view the lighthouse from a boat. We took a nature boat trip sponsored by the National Park service out of Northeast Harbor.
  • Take Route 3 onto Mt. Desert Island.
  • Just after you cross the small bridge onto Mt. Desert Island you will go right at the traffic light onto Route102.
  • Follow Route 102 for 4.3 into Somesville. At the next traffic light (just past the gas station) take a left onto Route 198.
  • Take Route 198 for about 1.5 miles. At this point you'll be at the intersection with Route 233 going to the left and Route 3/Route 198 going straight. Continue straight on Route 3/Route 198.
  • Route 3 will take you right into Northeast Harbor (about 4.5 miles).

Directions from Bar Harbor to Northeast Harbor:

  • Take Route 233 out of town. Follow 233 to the end. Take a left onto Route 3 to Northeast Harbor.
  • Alternatively, you can take Route 3 south out of Bar Harbor and follow it to Northeast Harbor. This route is slower but more scenic.
