Lubec Channel Light, built in 1889, is only one of three remaining spark plug
style lighthouses in Maine. The other two are Goose Rocks light near Vinalhaven
Island, and Spring Point Ledge in Portland.
The Lubec Channel Light was a manned lighthouse until a fire in 1939 claimed
the life of the keeper on duty. At that point the Coast Guard decided to
automate the light. Since that time the lighthouse had fallen into disrepair and
was going to be discontinued in 1989. But the local residents put a campaign
together to raise funds to restore the lighthouse. Today, after its facelift,
and actually being straightened out. The light had developed quite a lean over
the years but with close to three quarters of a million dollars worth of
renovations, it's stands nearly straight now.
