History/Info:
Ram Island Ledge light sits on a rocky ledge at the northern entrance to Portland Harbor. At high tide the ledge is completely covered. The lighthouse can be seen in the distance from Fort Williams State Park, the location of Portland Head Light.

Personal Note:
If you take a day trip to Peak's Island, which is just off the coast of Portland, you'll get a unique view of Ram Island Ledge. After you follow the directions to Seashore Ave and you see Ram Island Ledge Light, look off in the distance beyond the lighthouse. To the left of it you'll see Portland Head light. Then far off in the distance to the left of Ram Island you can see Cape Elizabeth Light. One location, 3 lighthouses!

Latitude/Longitude: 43°38'N 70°11'W

Directions:

  • Go to the page for Portland Head Light for directions to best see the lighthouse from land, which is Fort Williams State Park

For an interesting alternative viewing spot, you can view the lighthouse from the southern shore of Peak's Island. You can get a ferry to Peak's Island from the Casco Bay Line Ferry - http://www.cascobaylines.com/ Once on the island follow the below directions:

Directions: click here for overview map        click here for detail map

  • Once you depart from the ferry on Peaks Island go straight on Welch Ave for about 100 yards to the intersection with Island Ave (Peaks Island Inn will be on the far right corner).

  • Turn right onto Island Ave.

  • Take Island Ave for another couple hundred yards when it turns left and becomes New Island Ave.

  • In 0.1 miles take a right onto Whitehead St.

  • When Whitehead Ave turns to the left it becomes Seashore Ave. Keep on Seashore Ave for another 1/2 mile or so when you finally get to the shore. At that point you'll be able to see Ram Island Ledge light in the distance.
