Bird Island Lighthouse was built in 1819 and remained the only light
in Buzzards Bay until 1837 when the light on Ned's Point in
Mattapoisett was constructed. Ned's Point Lighthouse was classified
a "harbor light". At that time, Marion and Mattapoisett were still
considered the Town of Rochester. In 1849, because of increased
traffic in upper Buzzards Bay, the Wing's Neck Lighthouse was built.
The last light built in Buzzards Bay, or Massachusetts as a matter
of fact, was Cleveland's Ledge in 1943.
