Originally built in 1797 and reconstructed in 1857, Highland Cape Cod
Lighthouse is the oldest, highest, and most important light on Cape Cod.
The first light was from whale oil, then lard oil, then kerosene, then
electricity in 1932. Automated since 1986, it is still a functioning U.S.
Coast Guard Light. Locally known as Highland Light, on maritime charts it
is officially named Cape Cod Light.
In the mid-90's erosion of the
shoreline caused Highland Light to be moved back from the edge of the
cliffs. In the above photo you can see the keeper's house is raised, ready
to be moved.

- Once on Cape Cod get onto Route 6. Follow Route 6 past Chatham and Eastham into
Truro.
- Once in Truro take a right onto Aldrich Road (which appears to then
become S. Highland Road).
- Follow Aldrich/S. Highland Rd. for about 1-1.5 miles. Highland
Lighthouse will be on your right. There's a golf course just beyond it so
if you get to the golf course you went too far. :-)
