Minot's Ledge, lit in 1850, was the first lighthouse built in the US
that was not protected from the fierceness of the ocean and weather.
Unfortunately it was that exposure to the fury of ocean storms that
took the lives of two light keepers in 1851. The towers light gives
off a unique pattern of light in the sequence of 1-4-3. Someone
determined that the sequence stood for the number of letters in "I
Love You". Locals now call Minot's Ledge Light the "I Love You"
Lighthouse. Minot's had a keeper's house but it wasn't part of the
lighthouse itself but instead was on the mainland in Cohasset. At
that site now is a replica of the lighthouse and monuments to the
two light keepers who were killed and a plaque dedicated to the
building of the lighthouse.
