The lightship, designated WLV-613, was built in
1952 and originally stationed at Ambrose Channel in New York until
1967. Eventually in 1979 it was stationed off of Nantucket Island
and designated with the name Nantucket II. It alternated duty with
WLV-612, also known as Lightship Nantucket I (click
here to see the WLV-612 lightship page). One ship would relieve the other
ship every 21 days until both ships were relieved of their lightship
duties in 1983.
After deactivation the ship eventually was docked in the
Charlestown Navy Yard in Charlestown, MA, near the historic ship USS
Constitution. In 1998 the lightship was purchased by a private
businessman. It is currently located in Wareham, Ma. where it is
undergoing interior renovations (the exterior has already been
renovated).
