The first light at West Chop was
built in 1818, a stone tower which in 1838 had to be moved back from
the eroding bluff. In 1846 a new tower was built of rubble masonry,
and in 1892 the rubble tower was replaced with a brick tower which
was painted white. This is the tower which stands today. The West
Chop Light remains under the control of the Coast Guard, and the
buildings which stand near the tower are used to house Coast Guard
employees stationed at Menemsha.
