History/Info:
Originally built in 1821 on White Island, the current Isles of Shoals lighthouse was built in 1864-65. Although a nor'easter in October 1991 severely damaged some of the buildings near the lighthouse, the tower remained intact. The lighthouse's first keeper was Thomas Laighton, whose daughter, Celia Thaxter, is well known for her poems about lighthouses. Nearby Star Island, where Mr. Laighton built a hotel, which still stands today, is believed to be haunted by the ghost of one of the many wives of Blackbeard the Pirate. The area is rich in pirate lore, with some people still believing there is buried treasure.
